What is an atomic absorption spectrophotometer

AAS is an analytical technique used to determine the amount of certain elements in a sample. It utilizes the principle that atoms (and ions) can absorb light at a specific unique wavelength. When this specific wavelength of light is provided, energy (light) is absorbed by the atoms. The electrons in the atom move from the ground state to the excited state. The amount of light absorbed is measured and the concentration of the element in the sample can be calculated.

How does atomic absorption spectrophotometer work

Atomic Absorption Spectrometry is studied using an atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS or AA spectrometer). Here is how it works:

The sample is introduced into a nebulizer.

The nebulizer vaporizes the sample and converts it into a gas of free atoms.

A light source emits light at wavelengths characteristic of the element under test.

A monochromator selects a specific wavelength of light to excite the atoms in the sample.

The light passes through the gas sample.

The atoms in the sample absorb the characteristic wavelength of light.

The detector measures the amount of light absorbed.

From the amount of light absorbed the concentration of the element in the sample can be calculated.
